New Delhi: Congress MP R Sudha was reportedly targeted in a chain-snatching incident in the high-security Chanakyapuri area of the national capital on Monday morning. Speaking to News18, the parliamentarian recounted the ordeal and expressed disappointment over the lack of assistance from both bystanders and police officials.
“We were proceeding from the Tamil Nadu Guest House, where we are currently staying, when a man on a two-wheeler, wearing a helmet, approached us from the opposite direction. Assuming he needed space, we moved aside. Suddenly, he lunged at me, snatched my gold chain, and in the process, tore my clothes. I tried to hold onto my chain and clothing,” Sudha said.
The incident occurred in one of Delhi’s most secure zones, home to numerous embassies and VIP residences. Despite the location, the accused managed to escape.
“I shouted for help, screaming that he was taking my chain. There were several morning walkers and joggers nearby, but no one came forward to assist,” she added.
Criticising the police response, Sudha noted, “This area is supposed to be secure—it's near the embassies of the Czech Republic and Poland. Yet, there was no visible security. I saw a patrol vehicle and informed the officers, but they were unresponsive. One of them simply took down my name and phone number and told me to visit the police station to file a detailed complaint.”
Following the incident, the MP reached out to senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who accompanied her to meet the Lok Sabha Speaker. “He assured me that action would be taken. I have also submitted a formal complaint to the Honourable Home Minister and the Honourable Speaker, requesting immediate intervention. I came to Parliament for medical attention, as I continue to experience pain in my neck and shoulder,” she said.
The Delhi Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. CCTV footage from the vicinity is being reviewed, and multiple teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend the suspect.
The incident has raised serious questions about the efficacy of security arrangements in one of the capital’s most sensitive and guarded localities.
