New Delhi – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was assaulted on Tuesday during a public grievance hearing at her Civil Lines residence.
According to sources, the incident occurred during the weekly Jan Sunwai programme when a man, believed to be in his mid-30s, approached the Chief Minister with some papers. Moments later, he allegedly shouted at her, slapped her, pulled her hair, and hurled abuses, before engaging in a physical altercation.
Officials said court-related documents were recovered from the accused, who was immediately taken into custody. Delhi Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
Preliminary reports suggest the Chief Minister may have sustained a head injury, a claim raised by the BJP. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the attack, calling it “shameful and unacceptable.”
Party sources reiterated that the assailant, estimated to be around 35 years old, first handed over documents to the Chief Minister during the grievance session and then allegedly carried out the assault.
