Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Public Hearing, Assailant Identified as Gujarat Resident

New Delhi – The man who attacked Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing on Wednesday has been identified as Rajesh Sakriya, a 41-year-old resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. According to his family, Sakriya is a passionate dog lover who was disturbed by the Supreme Court’s recent directive to round up stray dogs in Delhi-NCR and move them to shelters.

His mother, Bhanu, told reporters that her son’s anger over the ruling may have prompted him to travel to the capital and confront the Chief Minister. “My son loves dogs. He was angry after the Supreme Court’s order against stray dogs and left for Delhi soon after. We don’t know anything else,” she said, as quoted by NDTV.

The incident occurred during the Chief Minister’s Jan Sunwai programme at her Civil Lines camp office. Witnesses said Sakriya first handed over some papers to Gupta before suddenly grabbing her hand and attempting to pull her. A brief scuffle ensued before security personnel and members of the public subdued him.

While Gupta was not seriously injured, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva confirmed she was “shaken” but safe. He dismissed reports that the Chief Minister was slapped, saying the altercation appeared to be limited to a physical tussle after the assailant tried to pull her.

Although some accounts suggest Sakriya may also have sought Gupta’s help regarding a relative’s arrest, his family maintains that his anger over the treatment of stray dogs was his primary motivation.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation across political lines. Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi described the assault as “unacceptable” and called for strict action. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa added: “She worries about Delhi. This is distressing for her detractors. I condemn the attack in the strongest words.”

Delhi Police Commissioner S. B. K. Singh visited the site and confirmed that Sakriya is currently under interrogation. An official statement from the police is expected shortly.
