Chennai — The Chennai Police on Saturday registered a Community Service Register (CSR) complaint against “unknown persons” after Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials conducted raids at an MLA hostel in the city. The officers were later identified as ED personnel, who carried out searches as part of an ongoing money-laundering probe linked to Tamil Nadu Rural Development Minister I Periyasamy and his son, Palani MLA I.P. Senthil Kumar, NDTV reported.
According to officials, ED teams simultaneously searched three locations — the minister’s residence in Dindigul, his son’s residence in Palani, and the home of his daughter Indirani in Dindigul’s Sivaji Nagar. Ahead of the operation, central paramilitary forces cordoned off the premises, and searches were conducted for several hours.
The raids are connected to a money-laundering case currently under judicial scrutiny. Periyasamy and his family have challenged the proceedings, with the Supreme Court scheduled to hear their plea on August 18.
DMK Criticises Raids as Diversionary Tactic
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) sharply criticised the ED action, alleging it was politically motivated. The party argued that the raids were intended to divert attention from what it termed as “vote chori” (vote theft), a phrase popularised by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Responding to the development, DMK Organisation Secretary R.S. Bharathi asserted that the party would “neither fear the ED nor Modi.” In a statement, he accused the BJP of misusing autonomous institutions for electoral purposes.
“The BJP stands exposed for indulging in electoral fraud by using the Election Commission. The country is shocked over this. To divert attention from the illegal vote chori, the Enforcement Directorate is conducting searches at premises linked to Periyasamy,” Bharathi said, as quoted by PTI.
