New Delhi, August 4, 2025 — Shibu Soren, veteran tribal leader and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, passed away on Monday at the age of 81. The announcement was made by his son and current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, in a heartfelt post on social media platform X.
“Respected Guruji, Dishom, has left us all. Today, I have become empty,” Hemant Soren wrote, marking the end of an era for Jharkhand’s tribal and political landscape.
Soren had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged kidney ailment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi since June 19, 2025. According to the hospital's medical bulletin, he had been on life support for the past month following a stroke. He was declared dead at 8:56 a.m. on August 4.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the demise of Mr. Shibu Soren, Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Despite the best efforts of our multidisciplinary medical team, he passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside,” read the hospital’s official statement, signed by Dr. A.K. Bhalla, Senior Consultant in Nephrology.
Soren, popularly known as “Guruji,” was a towering figure in tribal politics and the founder-patron of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which he led for nearly four decades. His political journey, deeply rooted in the rights and aspirations of the Adivasi community, shaped the very identity of Jharkhand as a separate state.
During his illness, several prominent political leaders visited him in the hospital. On June 26, President Droupadi Murmu paid a personal visit to inquire about his health. On July 15, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal also met with Hemant Soren and expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery. “I pray to God that he recovers quickly and returns home soon,” Kejriwal had posted on X.
Soren’s health had been a cause for concern for several weeks. In a June 24 statement, Hemant Soren acknowledged that his father had been receiving regular treatment for an extended period and was under close medical supervision.
As the state of Jharkhand and the nation mourn the loss of one of its most influential grassroots leaders, tributes are pouring in from across the political spectrum. Soren’s legacy as a mass leader, social reformer, and advocate for tribal rights remains deeply embedded in the political fabric of eastern India.
Funeral arrangements and state honors are expected to be announced by the Jharkhand government soon.
