New Delhi | August 7, 2025 In a move aimed at instilling a deeper sense of patriotism and honour among school students, the Union Government has announced the inclusion of chapters dedicated to three of India’s most revered military heroes—Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma—in the NCERT curriculum for the academic year 2024–25.
According to a statement released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the stories of these national icons will be introduced in Class VIII English, Class VIII Urdu, and Class VII Urdu textbooks, respectively. The initiative, the government noted, is intended to bring “inspirational narratives of courage and duty” into classrooms across the country.
Honouring the Legends
Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw
Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, popularly known as “Sam Bahadur,” holds the distinction of being the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. Celebrated for his charismatic leadership, Manekshaw played pivotal roles in five major military campaigns, including World War II, the 1947–48 war with Pakistan, the 1962 Sino-Indian War, and the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak conflicts.
His crowning achievement came during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, where his strategic brilliance led to India’s decisive victory and the birth of Bangladesh. Revered for his wit, courage, and military acumen, Manekshaw's legacy was immortalised in the 2023 biopic Sam Bahadur, featuring actor Vicky Kaushal in the lead role.
Brigadier Mohammad Usman
Known as the “Lion of Naushera,” Brigadier Mohammad Usman was a symbol of unwavering commitment and bravery. During the 1947–48 war, he led the Indian Army in a critical operation to recapture Jhangar and Naushera in Jammu and Kashmir. Despite being a Muslim, Usman rejected an offer to join the Pakistani Army after Partition, choosing instead to serve India with distinction.
He was martyred in action on July 3, 1948, and was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. His funeral was attended by national leaders including Lord Mountbatten and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, underscoring the immense respect he commanded.
Major Somnath Sharma
Major Somnath Sharma holds the honour of being the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award. At just 25 years of age, he laid down his life defending the Srinagar Airport during the Battle of Badgam on November 3, 1947, at the height of the first India–Pakistan war.
Previously, Major Sharma had served in Burma during World War II. His valorous last stand in Kashmir helped secure the Valley for India and set a standard for bravery and sacrifice that continues to inspire generations of Indian soldiers.
