MEA Slams Pakistan’s “Reckless, War-Mongering” Rhetoric; Warns of ‘Painful Consequences’ for Any Misadventure

New Delhi, August 14 — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday issued a sharp rebuke to Pakistan over what it termed as “reckless, war-mongering and hateful” remarks from Islamabad’s leadership, cautioning that any misadventure against India would invite “painful consequences.”

Addressing the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the pattern of anti-India rhetoric from Pakistan was a deliberate tactic to divert attention from its own domestic failures.

“We have seen reports regarding a continuing pattern of reckless, war-mongering, and hateful comments from Pakistani leadership against India. It is a well-known modus operandi to whip up anti-India sentiment repeatedly to hide their own shortcomings,” Jaiswal stated, as quoted by ANI.

On the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) issue, Jaiswal reaffirmed that India does not recognise the legality, legitimacy, or jurisdiction of the so-called ‘Court of Arbitration.’

“Its pronouncements are without jurisdiction, devoid of legal standing, and have no bearing on India’s rights to utilise its waters. India categorically rejects Pakistan’s selective and misleading references to this so-called ‘award.’ The IWT stands in abeyance as a sovereign decision of the Government of India,” he said.

The MEA’s remarks came in response to a series of hostile statements by Pakistani leaders — including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif — following New Delhi’s suspension of the IWT in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Sharif warned India against blocking Pakistan’s water, claiming, “You cannot snatch even one drop of Pakistan’s share.”

Former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari described the suspension as an “attack on the Indus Valley Civilisation,” while Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, threatened to destroy any dam India might construct. Addressing an event in Florida during his US visit, Munir went further, warning of nuclear escalation and claiming Pakistan could take “almost half of the world” down if faced with an existential threat.

India and Pakistan’s already fraught ties deteriorated further after the Pahalgam terror attack. New Delhi downgraded diplomatic relations, expelled Pakistani military attachés, and announced several punitive measures, including suspension of the IWT. The two countries exchanged cross-border hostilities for four days as India launched Operation Sindoor, striking multiple terror camps and air bases inside Pakistan, dealing a heavy blow to Islamabad’s military capabilities, and successfully intercepting incoming missile and drone attacks.
