Mumbai, August 26: A 26-year-old doctor from Mumbai has shared her disappointment after being denied a US B1/B2 visa, despite what she described as a strong academic record and extensive international travel history. The account, posted on Reddit, has sparked conversations about the unpredictability of visa approvals.
The applicant, a first-year postgraduate resident doctor, said she was “shocked” by the outcome. She explained that she had previously taken a year off to prepare for the NEET PG exam but has since resumed her medical career. Her travel record includes visits to nearly ten countries, such as Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Vietnam, Morocco, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Dubai.
During the visa interview, she said she greeted the officer politely and explained that her planned trip to the US was for tourism. She added that while her family had not visited the US before, they usually take an overseas trip every two years.
When asked about her ties to the US, she disclosed that her sister is currently pursuing her second year at a university there. She also highlighted her career, stating that she is a practicing physician earning about ₹8 lakh annually. According to her, both her parents hold valid US B1/B2 visas and she had intended to travel with them.
However, the officer concluded the interview by stating, “Ma’am, you are ineligible for the visa currently.”
The doctor further noted that she had completed two DS-160 forms — one earlier this year during her gap year, where she declared herself as preparing for exams, and another after securing her postgraduate seat, updating her employment and income details. She carried supporting documents, including savings, investments, and salary statements amounting to nearly ₹20 lakh annually, though her declared income was ₹8 lakh.
Reflecting on the outcome, she questioned whether her responses contributed to the denial. “Should I have said 20 instead of 8? Should I not have mentioned traveling with family? Please let me know what I said wrong,” she wrote.
