Mumbai – More than 780 passengers were rescued on Tuesday evening after two overcrowded Monorail trains stalled on elevated tracks during heavy rainfall, triggering panic and large-scale rescue operations.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said the disruption was caused by overcrowding, as stranded commuters turned to the Monorail when suburban train services were paralysed by the downpour. The sudden rush reportedly led to a power failure, disabling air-conditioning systems.
Several passengers complained of suffocation, and at least two fainted. One woman was admitted to hospital but is in stable condition, officials confirmed.
Rescue teams acted swiftly to calm anxious passengers. The fire department deployed jumping sheets beneath the tracks in case commuters attempted to leap from the stalled coaches. “People were scared. Some of them were ready to jump. Our priority was to prevent panic from turning into tragedy,” an official said, praising the coordinated response of emergency teams.
By late night, all 782 passengers had been safely evacuated. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 23 passengers received treatment for suffocation inside ambulances before being discharged. Two others, identified as Kismat Kumar (20) and Vivek Sonavane (28), were taken to Sion Hospital, where they remain stable.
