PM Modi Unveils ‘Sudarshan Chakra Mission’ — India’s Next-Generation Aerial Defence Shield to be Operational by 2035

In a landmark announcement on India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the launch of the Sudarshan Chakra Mission — an advanced, multi-layered aerial defence system designed to thwart cross-border attacks and safeguard strategic national assets. The system, to be fully operational by 2035, is set to mark a major leap in India’s defensive capabilities.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, the Prime Minister said the mission would “not only protect our country but deliver a befitting reply to any enemy nation.” Drawing inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna, he noted that the changing nature of modern warfare demands cutting-edge solutions.

“When I think of Lord Krishna, I also reflect on how the nature of warfare is evolving globally. India has shown its ability to face every new challenge. During Operation Sindoor, when Pakistan targeted our military bases, airfields, defence installations, centres of faith, and civilians, our forces intercepted missiles and drones with precision and control,” Modi said.

A Ten-Year Roadmap for a National Security Shield
The Sudarshan Chakra Mission will integrate advanced missile interception, drone defence, and precision targeting systems to create a formidable deterrent. The Prime Minister announced that the shield would extend beyond conventional military targets to cover key public spaces — including railway stations, hospitals, and religious sites — ensuring the safety of both strategic infrastructure and civilian hubs.

“By 2035, we will expand, strengthen, and modernise our national security architecture. The Sudarshan Chakra will be built entirely in India, from research and development to manufacturing, harnessing the talent of our youth and the skill of our people,” he said.

The system will feature a Precise Target System and integrate advanced weaponry capable of neutralising enemy threats and launching rapid counter-strikes. Defence analysts have already likened the mission’s concept to Israel’s ‘Iron Dome,’ but adapted for India’s geographical and strategic realities.

Context: Operation Sindoor and Regional Tensions
The announcement follows heightened tensions along the India–Pakistan border. In the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor, striking nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and eliminating over 100 militants. This was followed by four days of intense cross-border exchanges.

Officials say the Sudarshan Chakra Mission will be a cornerstone of India’s deterrence strategy, signalling both defensive strength and offensive readiness in an increasingly volatile security environment.
