Prime Minister Modi Announces India’s Plans for Indigenous Space Station on National Space Day

New Delhi, August 23 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that India is actively working towards establishing its own space station, marking a new milestone in the nation’s space ambitions. The announcement came during his address to the nation on the occasion of National Space Day.

Highlighting the achievements of Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently carried the tricolour to the International Space Station, the Prime Minister said the government will soon develop a dedicated astronaut pool. He called upon the youth of the country to actively participate in this pioneering initiative.

“India is rapidly advancing in breakthrough technologies such as semi-cryogenic engines and electric propulsion. With the tireless efforts of our scientists, the nation will soon achieve the success of Gaganyaan. In the years ahead, India will also have its own space station,” Prime Minister Modi said.

This year’s National Space Day is being observed under the theme ‘Aryabhatta to Gaganyaan: Ancient Wisdom to Infinite Possibilities’. Recalling his recent interaction with Group Captain Shukla, the Prime Minister said:
“Just three days ago, I met Shubhanshu Shukla. He filled every Indian with pride by hoisting the tricolour on the International Space Station. The emotions I felt when he showed me the flag are beyond words. In him, I saw the immense courage and boundless aspirations of a new India. To take these dreams forward, we are creating an astronaut pool. Today, on Space Day, I invite my young friends to join this initiative and give wings to India’s dreams.”

National Space Day commemorates India’s historic achievement on August 23, 2023, when Chandrayaan-3 successfully executed a soft landing of the Vikram Lander on the Moon’s surface, followed by the deployment of the Pragyan Rover. With this success, India became the fourth nation to achieve a lunar landing and the first to do so near the Moon’s south pole. The landing site was named Shiv Shakti Point.

To honour this remarkable accomplishment, the Government of India declared August 23 as National Space Day.
