Bengaluru, August 14, 2025 — The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, prime accused Pavithra Gowda, and five others in connection with the murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, ordering their immediate arrest.
A bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and R. Mahadevan set aside the Karnataka High Court’s order granting bail, terming it a “mechanical exercise” marred by “serious infirmities.” The court directed that the trial be conducted expeditiously and warned against extending special privileges to the accused in custody.
“The day we come to know that the accused persons are being provided 5-star treatment, the first step would be to suspend the jail superintendent and all officials involved,” the bench observed.
Pavithra Gowda was arrested soon after the order and will be produced before a court. Darshan, reportedly in Mysuru at the time, is being pursued by a Bengaluru police team. The actor was initially arrested in June 2024 but was granted bail by the High Court in December last year.
The Renukaswamy Murder Case
Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga, died of “shock haemorrhage” caused by multiple blunt-force injuries, according to his autopsy. His body was found in Bengaluru’s Kamakshipalya area on June 9, 2024.
Police allege that Darshan, Gowda, and others abducted the victim — an auto driver and fan of the actor — after he allegedly sent obscene messages to Pavithra Gowda. The victim was reportedly held captive and tortured for three days in a Bengaluru shed before succumbing to his injuries.
The case has drawn intense public attention in Karnataka, with calls for swift justice.
