Uttarkashi, August 6, 2025 — A powerful cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Tuesday triggered devastating flash floods and landslides in the high-altitude region of Dharali, claiming at least four lives and leaving a trail of destruction across several villages.
Authorities confirmed that more than 130 individuals have been rescued amid continuing heavy rainfall and hazardous conditions. However, 28 tourists from Kerala remain unaccounted for following a massive mudslide in Dharali village—one of the worst-hit areas in the aftermath of the deluge.
Two cloudburst events were recorded—one over Dharali and another in the Sukhi Top area—resulting in widespread damage. The cloudburst over the Kheer Gad region sent torrents of water, rocks, and debris cascading down through villages along the Gangotri route. Dharali, a prominent stop for pilgrims heading to the Gangotri temple, suffered extensive destruction. Several residential homes, homestays, hotels, and restaurants have reportedly been damaged or washed away.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, led by the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
The current tragedy has revived painful memories of past disasters in the state. On February 7, 2021, a glacier burst in Chamoli district sent a deadly torrent down the Dhauli Ganga river, destroying two hydroelectric projects and claiming more than 200 lives. In the years that followed, towns like Joshimath witnessed alarming land subsidence, with over 700 homes developing cracks and groundwater seepage through walls and roads.
In response to the recent calamity, Members of Parliament from Uttarakhand met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to brief him on the situation. BJP MP Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah stated, “The Prime Minister has assured us of full support and has promised all necessary assistance to manage the crisis and aid in recovery.”
The state government has issued advisories urging caution in flood-prone and hilly regions as weather forecasts continue to predict further rainfall in the coming days.
