Delhi: The newly announced $100,000 annual fee for H-1B visas will only apply to new applicants, according to a report.
A senior US administration official told ANI that the fee hike will not apply to existing H1-B visa holders.
"Those visiting the country, leaving the country or visiting India will not have to return or pay the $100,000 fee before Sunday. The $100,000 fee is only for new applicants and does not apply to existing visa holders," ANI reported, citing the US administrator.
Several companies have asked H1B visa holders working outside India to return home by 9:30 am today, Indian time. A US official has reportedly said that there is no need for this. The return of hundreds of people has led to a surge in airfares. In this situation, the government has instructed diplomatic missions to ensure assistance to those returning.
India had said in a statement yesterday that the increase in H1B visa fees to Rs 100,000 would affect many families and should also be seen as a humanitarian issue.
