India to Review Implications of Saudi Arabia–Pakistan Strategic Defence Pact: MEA

New Delhi | September 18, 2025 — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said it will carefully assess the implications of the strategic mutual defence agreement signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

In an official statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the Indian government had been aware of discussions leading to the pact, which formalises a long-standing security arrangement between Riyadh and Islamabad.

“We have seen reports of the signing of a strategic mutual defence pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The Government was aware that this development, which formalises a long-standing arrangement between the two countries, had been under consideration. We will study the implications of this development for our national security as well as for regional and global stability,” Jaiswal said.

The MEA reiterated that India remains fully committed to safeguarding its national interests and ensuring comprehensive security across all domains.

Details of the Pact

The agreement was signed during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s state visit to Riyadh, where he was received by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman at Al-Yamamah Palace, according to Geo News.

A joint statement released after the signing ceremony underscored the historical ties between the two nations, citing nearly eight decades of partnership rooted in “brotherhood, Islamic solidarity, and shared strategic interests.”

The pact commits both countries to enhanced defence cooperation, strengthened joint deterrence, and a unified response to external threats. Notably, the agreement stipulates that any aggression against one nation will be considered an act of aggression against both.

Historical Context

For decades, Pakistan has maintained close defence ties with Saudi Arabia, regularly deploying troops and providing military training to support the Kingdom’s security needs. The newly formalised defence pact builds on this longstanding cooperation, reflecting the countries’ intention to deepen strategic engagement in the face of evolving regional challenges.
