India Votes for Next Vice President: Key Contest Unfolds in Parliament

The election to choose India’s next Vice President will be held today, with members of both Houses of Parliament casting their votes.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated former Tamil Nadu BJP president C.P. Radhakrishnan, while the Opposition has fielded senior advocate B. Sudershan Reddy as its candidate.

According to Rajya Sabha Secretary-General and Returning Officer P.C. Mody, polling will take place in Room No. F-101, Vasudha, Parliament House, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Opposition has projected the contest as an “ideological battle,” though the numerical strength in Parliament appears to favour the NDA.

In the meantime, several regional parties—including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)—have opted to abstain. Party leaders have indicated that the decision reflects a focus on state-level priorities and a desire to maintain equidistance from both the NDA and the Congress-led INDIA bloc.
