NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday issued a strong rebuttal over alleged abusive remarks directed at his late mother during a Congress-RJD rally in Bihar, describing the incident as an affront to every woman in the country.
Speaking at an event of the Bihar Rajya Jeevika Nidhi Saakh Sahkari Sangh Limited, PM Modi said the episode had caused him deep personal pain but also struck a chord with the people of Bihar. “Mother is our world, our self-respect. My mother, who had no connection with politics and who is no longer alive, was abused from the stage of RJD-Congress in Bihar. These abuses are not just an insult to my mother, but to all mothers, sisters, and daughters of the country,” he said. https://t.co/381gpeg2oX
The Prime Minister recalled how his late mother had lived a simple life and separated from him so that he could dedicate himself to public service. “That mother of mine, who lived to be over 100, was insulted. Sisters and mothers, I can see the pain on your faces. I know the people of Bihar share the grief I feel in my heart,” he added.
Sharpening his criticism of the opposition, PM Modi remarked, “A ‘Yuvraaj,’ born with golden and silver spoons, cannot understand the struggles of a poor mother.”
The controversy erupted after a video went viral on social media purportedly showing unidentified men making abusive comments about the Prime Minister and his late mother from the stage of Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga, where RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav was also present.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a key BJP ally, condemned the incident, calling the language used “utterly deplorable.” In a post on X, he said, “During the Voter Adhikar Yatra in Darbhanga, the use of highly inappropriate language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother is deeply condemnable.”
The controversy has already sparked political tensions in Bihar. BJP workers clashed with Congress supporters in Patna last week during a protest over the alleged remarks. Videos circulated by news agency ANI showed workers from both sides attacking each other with party flags.
