Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Thursday underscored the strategic importance of his nation’s partnership with India, describing it as one rooted in “shared values, mutual respect, and a deep reservoir of trust.” His remarks came during a joint press briefing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, as part of his three-day official visit to India that began on Tuesday.
Highlighting the “great uncertainty and turbulence” prevailing in the global landscape, Wong said the relationship between India and Singapore is critical in navigating challenges and advancing regional stability. Although he refrained from naming specific countries, his comments come against the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump’s steep tariff measures — including a 50% levy on India over Russian oil transactions and a 10% tariff on goods imported from Singapore — that have added to global trade strains.
“In a world marked by uncertainty, the partnership between India and Singapore becomes even more vital. We draw strength from our shared history and the trust between our peoples,” Wong stated. “I look forward to working hand in hand with Prime Minister Modi to elevate the Singapore-India partnership to greater heights in the years ahead.”
The Singapore leader also announced plans to expand cooperation in frontier sectors, particularly space technology. He noted that India has already launched more than 20 satellites built in Singapore, and that a new Memorandum of Understanding on space collaboration would “push the boundaries of what both nations can achieve together.”
Wong further underlined Singapore’s role as India’s largest foreign investor, accounting for nearly one-quarter of total FDI inflows into the country. He described his discussions with Prime Minister Modi as “fruitful,” adding that both sides agreed to chart a path for deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across trade, investment, innovation, and emerging technologies.
