Chennai Man Duped in Online Dating Trap, Robbed by Transgender Woman and Accomplice

Chennai, Oct. 12 — A 21-year-old man’s attempt to befriend a woman through a mobile app ended in shock and financial loss after he was allegedly assaulted and robbed by a transgender woman and her associate in Chennai.

The victim, Udhayakumar, a native of Villupuram and an employee at a private firm in Korattur, had been using social media and mobile applications to meet women. He reportedly received a call from a person named “Ashwita”, whose attractive profile photo appeared on one such app, inviting him to meet in Murali Krishna Nagar.

Expecting to meet a young woman, Udhayakumar visited the location — only to discover that “Ashwita” was in fact a transgender woman. Before he could react, the woman and another man accompanying her allegedly attacked him, brandishing a knife and threatening to kill him if he resisted. The duo then robbed him of his mobile phone, cash, and other valuables before letting him go with a warning not to inform the police.

Following the incident, Udhayakumar filed a complaint with the Valasaravakkam Police, who registered a case and launched an investigation. Police later arrested two suspects — Mustafa alias Ashwita (30) and Dinesh Kumar (28) — in connection with the crime.

Investigators revealed that the accused had been using photos of attractive women on various dating and social media platforms to lure unsuspecting men, then extorting money, jewellery, and vehicles through intimidation. Many victims, police said, had refrained from filing complaints out of fear of embarrassment, allowing the gang to continue its operations unchecked.

During the arrests, police seized ₹95,000 in cash, 11 mobile phones, a knife, and four motorcycles from the suspects. Authorities are now searching for a third accomplice believed to be involved in the scheme.

Police have cautioned the public against engaging with unknown profiles on dating or social networking apps, warning that such interactions often lead to blackmail, extortion, or personal harm. The case serves as another reminder of the growing risks of online traps and social media frauds.
