A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect at noon on Friday, with Israeli forces beginning a strategic withdrawal from multiple areas across Gaza. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that all fire had stopped at midday local time and that troops were repositioning to pre-agreed deployment lines as part of the truce.
The ceasefire follows a deal brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, which encompasses the cessation of hostilities, the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas, and a prisoner exchange involving Palestinian detainees.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that Israel’s Cabinet had approved the overall framework of the plan. However, crucial questions remain unresolved, including governance arrangements in Gaza and whether Hamas will agree to fully disarm.
In an official statement posted on social media, the IDF said:
"The Ceasefire Agreement came into effect at 12:00. Since then, IDF troops have begun repositioning along updated deployment lines in preparation for the ceasefire and the return of hostages. Forces in the Southern Command remain on alert to neutralize any immediate threats."
Reports from Gaza’s civil defence agency confirmed that armoured vehicles and soldiers were seen withdrawing from areas including Gaza City and Khan Yunis.
Netanyahu Addresses Nation, Hopes for Simhat Torah Joy
In a televised address, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed hope that the upcoming Simhat Torah festival, beginning Monday night, would transform into a national celebration with the safe return of hostages.
"Citizens of Israel, two years ago, Simhat Torah became a day of national mourning," he said. "This Simhat Torah, with God’s help, will be a day of national joy, celebrating the return of all our brothers and sisters held hostage."
Despite the ceasefire, Netanyahu issued a stern warning that hostilities could resume if Hamas fails to meet the terms of the agreement. He emphasised that Hamas must be disarmed and Gaza fully demilitarised.
"If this is achieved the easy way, great. If not, it will be achieved the hard way," Netanyahu said, making clear that the ceasefire could remain temporary if Israel’s conditions are not fulfilled.
