New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended support to the United States’ ongoing efforts to end the Gaza conflict, commending U.S. President Donald Trump’s leadership for bringing “decisive progress” toward peace in the region.
In a statement shared on social media, PM Modi said, “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward.”
The Prime Minister reiterated India’s long-standing support for a negotiated two-state solution, envisioning “a sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel, within secure and recognized borders.”
His remarks came shortly after reports emerged that Hamas had partially accepted a U.S.-brokered peace deal, agreeing in principle to release hostages captured during the October 7 attack on Israel.
According to the Associated Press, Hamas expressed readiness to comply with parts of the agreement but raised reservations requiring further discussions. Senior Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera that Trump’s proposal “cannot be implemented without negotiations.” He added that releasing all hostages within 72 hours would be challenging, as locating the remains of some captives could take days or even weeks.
Marzouk further indicated that Hamas was willing to hand over its weapons to a future Palestinian authority governing Gaza, though this clause was not explicitly mentioned in the group’s official statement.
PM Modi emphasized that India will continue to support all credible international efforts aimed at achieving a durable and just peace in the Middle East.
