Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat, addressing the centenary celebrations of the organisation on Thursday, reflected on national security, international relations, and emerging ideological challenges in the wake of recent events.
Referring to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 Indians were killed after being singled out based on their religion, Bhagwat said the tragedy had left the nation both grief-stricken and resolute. “With complete preparedness, our government and armed forces gave a befitting reply. The government’s resolve, the valour of the armed forces, and the unity of society created an ideal atmosphere in the country,” he said.
Bhagwat stressed that while India maintains a friendly approach towards all nations, the incident revealed the importance of remaining vigilant and self-reliant in matters of security. “The role played by various countries in the aftermath of this incident and our response showed us who our true friends are. Within the country, however, there exist unconstitutional elements working to destabilise the nation,” he warned.
Turning to the internal threat of extremism, the RSS chief asserted that the principles of the Naxalite movement were “cruel and hollow,” leading society to reject their ideology, even as security forces and the government acted swiftly to curb their influence.
On regional instability, Bhagwat raised concerns about developments in neighbouring countries, particularly Nepal. “The instability we see in nearby nations affects us deeply—not just from a security perspective, but also because of our shared history, sense of belonging, and emotional connection,” he remarked. He cautioned that violent protests against governments failing to address people’s concerns serve no constructive purpose.
Bhagwat further highlighted the dangers of divisive and destructive global ideologies that, according to him, have eroded traditions, prosperity, culture, and faith worldwide. “A new wave of harmful ideologies has emerged, seeking to influence even India. This has caused widespread social disruption, forcing nations across the world to rethink their strategies,” he said.
