A heart-wrenching incident in Kairana, Shamli district, has sent shockwaves across the region. A 38-year-old daily wage worker named Salman, reportedly devastated over his wife’s repeated acts of infidelity, ended his life by jumping into the Yamuna River with his four children. Police have since arrested his wife, Khushnum, and her alleged lover, Sabir, and remanded them to judicial custody.
According to reports, Salman, a native of Bihar, had been living in Shamli for several years, working as a labourer. His wife Khushnum allegedly eloped five times in the past seven months with Sabir, each time being brought back by her husband after reconciliation attempts. However, this time, it appears Salman had reached his emotional breaking point.
On October 3, the day of the tragic event, Salman sent a video message to his sister, asking, “Son, who is responsible for our deaths? It is your mother and her lover.” Shortly after sending the message, he took his four children and jumped into the Yamuna River.
The distressing video soon went viral on social media, prompting police to launch a large-scale search operation. On October 5, the bodies of Salman and his eldest daughter, Mehak, were recovered. Search efforts continue for the remaining three children.
Investigations have confirmed that Khushnum and Sabir were involved in an illicit relationship, which had left Salman mentally shattered. During interrogation, Khushnum reportedly expressed grief over her children’s deaths, but showed no remorse for her husband’s demise. Sabir initially denied the relationship but later confessed after police presented concrete evidence.
Both accused were produced before court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody, as authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragic case.
