Bareilly (U.P.), Oct 10: Uttar Pradesh Police gunned down one of the state’s most-wanted criminals, Iftikhar Khan, during an encounter in the Bhojipura police station limits early Thursday morning.
According to senior officials, the encounter took place between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m., following a precise intelligence tip-off about Khan’s whereabouts. The police launched an operation to arrest him, which led to an exchange of fire.
Bareilly SSP Anurag Arya confirmed that Khan, a resident of Kasganj district, was fatally injured in retaliatory police firing after he opened fire at officers during the raid. “He was taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” Arya said. One police officer also sustained injuries in the operation.
Police recovered a pistol and 17 live cartridges from the scene.
Khan, also known by his aliases ‘Shaitan’ and ‘Pattalkaran’, had a long criminal history involving robbery, murder, and violent assaults. He was wanted in several cases registered across multiple police stations, including those under the jurisdiction of Chainpur Police Station.
The Uttar Pradesh Police had earlier announced a cash reward of ₹1 lakh for information leading to his capture. Authorities described him as a “habitual and dangerous offender” who had repeatedly evaded arrest.
Meanwhile, one of Khan’s close aides managed to escape during the gunfight, and a massive search operation has been launched to trace him.
Police sources said the encounter is being investigated as per standard procedure, and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
