Alappuzha/Kerala:In a poignant discovery highlighting a life lived in anonymity, police recovered ₹4.52 lakh in cash from the belongings of a beggar who was found dead on a shop verandah in Charummood, a day after he was injured in a road accident.
The man, identified as Anil Kishore of Kaayamkulam Thaiparambu, was reportedly hit by a scooter on the evening of January 5. Bystanders rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors noted serious head injuries and advised specialised treatment. However, the man is believed to have left the hospital on his own later that night without informing anyone.
On the following morning, he was found dead on a shop verandah near the accident site. Police were alerted and shifted the body to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
During a subsequent inspection of his belongings at the Nooranad police station, officers made a startling discovery. Cash amounting to ₹4,52,207 was found stored in plastic containers and wallets, carefully packed and sealed with adhesive tape. The counting process reportedly took several hours.
In addition to Indian currency, police also recovered 12 notes of ₹2,000 denomination and a small amount of Saudi riyals. The verification and counting were carried out in the presence of a local panchayat member, Philip Umman, and a team comprising Sub-Inspector Rajendran, Assistant Sub-Inspector Radhakrishnan Achari, Civil Police Officer Manilal, and social worker Aravindakshan.
Police said that efforts are underway to trace the deceased’s relatives, as no immediate family members have so far come forward. The recovered cash will be produced before the court, Nooranad Station House Officer S. Sreekumar said, adding that the investigation into the man’s background and family details has been intensified.
The incident has drawn attention to the silent and often unseen lives led by many on the margins of society, even as the circumstances surrounding Anil Kishore’s death continue to be examined.
