Bengaluru: A hidden camera was discovered inside the women’s restroom at Sandhya Theatre in the busy Madiwala area of Bengaluru, triggering public outrage and raising serious concerns over women’s safety in public spaces. A young man employed at the theatre has been taken into police custody in connection with the incident.
The shocking discovery was made on Sunday evening, January 4, while a Telugu film titled Nu Naaku Nachav was being screened at the theatre. Women who visited the restroom during the screening noticed the concealed camera and immediately alerted others, prompting a commotion inside the premises.
As news of the discovery spread, tensions escalated and a large crowd gathered at the theatre. Moviegoers and local residents reportedly apprehended the suspected individual and handed him over to the police. Reports indicate that the suspect was assaulted by members of the crowd before police arrived at the scene.
Suspect Identified as Theatre Employee
Police have confirmed that the detained individual is an employee of the theatre. Investigators are examining whether he had previously recorded similar footage and whether any such material was shared or circulated on online platforms.
The suspect’s mobile phone and the recovered camera have been sent for forensic analysis. Police officials said additional charges would be considered based on the findings of the forensic examination.
Concerns Among Local and Malayali Communities
Theatre-goers expressed deep concern following the incident, particularly as Sandhya Theatre is located close to Madiwala and BTM Layout—areas with a significant Malayali population. The episode has renewed fears over the safety of women in public places, including entertainment venues.
Authorities noted that similar incidents have been reported at theatres in Bengaluru in the past. In 2024, police arrested a minor in connection with a comparable case involving the secret filming of women.
Investigation Ongoing
Following the incident, Madiwala police have begun reviewing CCTV footage from the theatre and questioning other staff members to determine whether additional individuals were involved. Police have urged women to remain vigilant while using public restrooms and assured that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
