Caracas/Washington/Seoul/Moscow: The detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores by the United States has triggered sharp reactions across the globe, escalating geopolitical tensions and raising fears of wider international conflict. The move has drawn strong condemnation not only from Latin American nations but also from countries such as North Korea and Russia.
US officials have accused Maduro of involvement in narco-terrorism and large-scale drug trafficking, allegations that Washington says justified the operation. However, critics argue that the action risks destabilising an already fragile global order and could push rival powers toward open confrontation.
North Korea Warns of ‘Third World War’
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a direct warning to Washington, stating that the detention of Maduro could lead to a “Third World War.” In an official statement carried by North Korean state media, Kim described Maduro as a personal “friend” and demanded that US President Donald Trump and his administration immediately clarify the legal status of the detained Venezuelan leaders and release them unconditionally.
Kim warned of “grave and irreversible international consequences” if the United States failed to reverse its actions, accusing Washington of “imperialist aggression” and cautioning that such coercive measures could spark a global military confrontation.
Russia Condemns US Action, Calls for Diplomacy
Russia also strongly criticised the United States, accusing it of carrying out a “military attack against Venezuela.” In a detailed statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed the US allegations as “completely unfounded and fabricated,” arguing that the operation was driven by ideological hostility rather than legal or diplomatic considerations.
Moscow urged all parties to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through peaceful dialogue, warning that unilateral actions of this nature threaten regional stability. Russia, one of Venezuela’s closest allies, indicated that it would raise the issue at the United Nations.
US Details Charges Against Maduro and Flores
US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that indictments would be filed against Maduro and Flores in the Southern District of New York. The charges include conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, large-scale cocaine trafficking, illegal possession of machine guns and other prohibited weapons, and conspiracy against the United States.
Bondi said the arrests followed US airstrikes conducted by the American Air Force in Caracas and claimed that Maduro’s government had collaborated with drug cartels responsible for supplying narcotics to the United States. Describing the operation as a “victory for justice,” Bondi said it would help strengthen democracy in Latin America.
US officials also stated that the same elite US Army unit involved in past high-profile operations, including the capture of Saddam Hussein and ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was deployed in the mission that led to Maduro’s detention.
