Two trains collided in southern Spain, killing 10 people and injuring 100 others, emergency services said.
A police spokesman initially said five people had died in the accident in Cordoba province, but the death toll was soon revised to 10.
A train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed near Adamas and, as it crossed over to another track, hit an oncoming train, which also derailed, Spain's ADIF rail body posted on X.
"We have received calls from people reporting injuries and being trapped," a spokesman for the Andalusian emergency services told AFP.
A witness told public broadcaster TVE that one of the carriages of the first train had completely overturned. Television images showed medical teams and firefighters at the scene.
A journalist from public broadcaster RNE, who was travelling on a train, said the impact felt like "an earthquake".
He said passengers used emergency hammers to break out the windows of the carriages. Spanish media reported that there were a total of 400 people on both trains.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a statement that the situation was being closely monitored.
Isabel Diaz Ayuso, president of the Madrid region, said that their hospitals are also available in the Andalusia region if needed. Rail traffic between Madrid and Andalusia has been suspended.
