Dhaka: The Bangladesh High Commission resumed visa services for Indian citizens on Friday.
This is seen as the first step towards normalizing India-Bangladesh relations. The move comes three days after Tariq Rahman took office as Prime Minister. Visa services for Indian citizens were suspended two months ago. Observers say this is part of the BNP government's emphasis on relations with India.
The move comes a day after a senior Indian consular official said India would soon restore all visa services in Bangladesh.
The two countries suspended visa services in December following the problems following the death of anti-India youth leader Sharif Usman Hadi and the deterioration of relations between the countries. Hadi's death led to large-scale protests in Bangladesh, which strengthened the anti-India stance. It led to severe diplomatic tensions. The departure of Muhammad Yunus and the entry of Tariq are indications of a positive turn in relations with India.
The Bangladesh High Commission announced that services had resumed on Friday morning. Sources also said that all categories of visa services for Indians have been restored.
