A 32-year-old woman was seriously injured in an acid attack at Gurugram Civil Hospital on Sunday night, after the assailant allegedly mistook her for his former girlfriend, police said.
The incident occurred on the hospital premises in Sector 10, Gurugram between 8:15 pm and 8:30 pm, according to preliminary information. The victim sustained severe injuries and was later referred to Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences for advanced medical treatment.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the attack took place near the hospital’s emergency ward. The accused allegedly approached the woman from behind, threw acid on her, and fled the scene. Despite the sudden attack, the victim reportedly told police that she was able to see the assailant’s face.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect had been stalking a 20-year-old woman, who believes she was the intended target of the attack. The woman, a resident of Nuh district, had been visiting her maternal aunt in Subhash Nagar, Sector 5, Gurugram at the time.
She alleged that her 24-year-old former boyfriend confronted her earlier in the evening and assaulted her.
“My former boyfriend reached there and attacked me around 5 pm. He struck me three times on the head with a rod, causing injuries,” she reportedly told the police.
Following the assault, she was taken to the Gurugram Civil Hospital for treatment. According to her statement, the accused followed her to the hospital premises.
“It is likely that my former boyfriend threw acid on another woman, mistaking her for me, as we were wearing similar clothes,” she said.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital premises to identify and locate the accused. Authorities said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
