New Delhi: Air India on Sunday announced the operation of 78 additional international flights across several routes in response to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, which has significantly disrupted travel plans for thousands of passengers.
In an official statement, the airline said the additional services will operate between March 10 and March 18, increasing capacity on key long-haul and regional routes where demand remains strong. The move comes as many global carriers continue to adjust schedules due to the evolving conflict in the region.
“To support passengers amid the ongoing situation in West Asia, Air India will operate 78 additional flights on nine routes between March 10 and March 18,” the airline said in a statement posted on the social media platform X (Twitter).
The additional flights will enhance connectivity between India and several major international gateways, including John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, Heathrow Airport in London, Frankfurt Airport, Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Zurich Airport, as well as regional destinations such as Malé and Colombo. These services will operate on routes connecting Delhi and Mumbai with the respective destinations.
The airline noted that the 78 additional services will provide 17,660 extra seats across both directions, offering much-needed travel options during a period when international flight capacity remains constrained.
According to the carrier, the additional flights to European destinations will be operated using the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Services to Malé and Colombo will be operated with the Airbus A320neo, while the proposed flights between Delhi and New York (JFK) are expected to be operated by the Boeing 777-300ER, subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
Commenting on the development, Nipun Aggarwal, Chief Commercial Officer of Air India, said the airline remains committed to maintaining international connectivity despite the operational challenges posed by the regional conflict.
“Despite the odds, Air India continues to maintain its scheduled services to Europe and North America, sustaining connectivity to several international gateways using alternative routings that are assessed as safe for operations,” Aggarwal said.
The additional flights are expected to ease travel pressure and provide greater flexibility for passengers as airlines navigate the evolving security and airspace situation across West Asia.
