Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday launched a sharp political attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of repeatedly resorting to “victim card” politics, while releasing the BJP’s chargesheet against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Shah alleged that Banerjee frequently portrays herself as a victim during election periods to gain political sympathy. He claimed that the electorate in West Bengal has now grown aware of such tactics. The state is scheduled to go to polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting set for May 4.
Shah remarked that Banerjee has, on multiple occasions, appeared injured or unwell during election campaigns and subsequently approached the Election Commission alleging bias, while simultaneously criticising the institution. He asserted that such strategies would no longer influence voters.
BJP’s Stand on Infiltration
Highlighting concerns over illegal infiltration, Shah stated that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being conducted nationwide, but claimed that only in West Bengal were judicial officers required to be deployed. Questioning the circumstances behind this, he accused the state government of enabling irregularities.
He further emphasised that the BJP is committed not only to removing alleged infiltrators from voter lists but also to expelling them from the country. According to Shah, curbing infiltration would be a top priority if the party comes to power in the state.
Projecting electoral confidence, he asserted that a BJP government would be formed in West Bengal following the results, and pledged that within 45 days of assuming office, necessary land would be allocated for border fencing to prevent illegal entry.
Criticism of OBC Reservation Policy
Shah also criticised the state government’s inclusion of 77 communities in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, alleging that 75 of these belonged to the Muslim community. He questioned whether reservation policies should be determined on religious lines and stated that such an approach would not be sustained.
Assurance on Recruitment Reforms
Addressing concerns over recruitment irregularities, Shah promised corrective measures if the BJP assumes power. He announced that candidates who lost opportunities due to alleged recruitment scams would be granted a five-year age relaxation. Additionally, he assured that they would be given fresh opportunities in Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruitments under a transparent and merit-based system.
The remarks come amid an intensifying political contest in West Bengal, with both major parties sharpening their narratives ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
