Missiles and Drones Strike Nakhchivan Airport Near Iran Border, Two Injured

Baku / Nakhchivan, March 5: Tensions escalated in the South Caucasus on Thursday after missiles and drones reportedly launched from the direction of Iran struck the territory of Nakhchivan International Airport in Azerbaijan, according to government sources cited by Reuters. The incident left two civilians injured and raised concerns about a potential escalation of regional tensions.

The airport is located approximately 10 kilometres from the Iranian border, making it a strategically sensitive area. Officials reported that one drone crashed into the airport’s terminal building, while another struck near a school in the nearby village of Shakarabad.

Authorities in Azerbaijan strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a serious violation of international law. “We strongly condemn these drone attacks originating from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” officials said in a statement, adding that the strike caused damage to airport infrastructure and injured civilians.

Reports also indicated that a fire broke out at the airport following the incident. However, officials have not yet confirmed the exact number of missiles and drones involved in the attack.

The incident has heightened fears of further instability in the region, as tensions continue to rise amid the broader geopolitical conflict involving Iran and its regional adversaries.
