U.S. Airstrikes Target Iran’s Kharg Island as Conflict Escalates

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States had carried out major airstrikes on military targets on Kharg Island, a strategic hub for Iran’s oil exports.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the strikes had “completely destroyed” the targeted facilities, describing the operation as one of the most powerful bombing missions conducted in the Middle East in recent years. He also said the United States Navy would soon begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to safeguard commercial shipping routes.

Strategic Target: Kharg Island

The airstrikes reportedly focused on Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, which handles the vast majority of Iran’s crude oil exports. The island is widely regarded as one of the most critical pillars of Iran’s energy infrastructure.

“There is nothing they can do about it. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, nor will it have the ability to threaten the United States, the Middle East, or the world,” Trump said in his post, warning that Iran’s military and its allies should “lay down their arms.”

As tensions intensified in the ongoing U.S.–Israel–Iran conflict, Kharg Island has increasingly become a focal point of strategic calculations in Washington.

Why Kharg Island Matters

Despite weeks of attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, Kharg Island had largely remained untouched until now. However, recent reports indicated that the Trump administration had been examining new military options involving the island, including potential special-forces operations linked to the broader strategy against Tehran.

Situated about 25–30 kilometres off Iran’s coastline, Kharg Island plays an outsized role in Iran’s economy. The island serves as the country’s primary crude oil export terminal, handling roughly 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports and possessing loading terminals capable of processing up to seven million barrels per day.

Since the 1960s, when the facility was significantly expanded with international investment, Kharg Island has served as the backbone of Iran’s energy exports and a crucial link between the country’s oil fields and global markets.

A Calculated Escalation

Until recently, energy infrastructure such as Kharg Island had been largely spared from direct attacks. Analysts suggest this restraint reflected concerns about the island’s importance not only to Iran’s economy but also to global oil markets.

A major disruption to Kharg’s operations could severely damage Iran’s ability to export crude oil. At the same time, such an attack could trigger wider consequences, including sharp increases in global oil prices, disruptions to tanker traffic in the Gulf, and the risk of a broader regional energy crisis.

The island’s proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil chokepoints, further heightens the global economic stakes of any military action in the area.

Strategic Pressure on Iran

According to reports, U.S. officials have explored options involving Kharg Island as part of a strategy to weaken Iran’s ability to sustain the conflict. Discussions among U.S. and Israeli officials have reportedly included the possibility of special-forces missions inside Iran aimed at securing nuclear materials or critical infrastructure during later stages of the war.

Some analysts have also suggested that neutralising or controlling Kharg Island could dramatically reduce Iran’s oil revenues—widely considered the government’s primary financial lifeline.

A U.S. official cited in regional media reports indicated that such a move could place Iran’s vast oil resources “out of the hands” of the current regime while intensifying economic pressure during the conflict.

Nuclear Concerns Add Urgency

Kharg Island’s growing strategic importance is also linked to the broader nuclear crisis involving Iran. Intelligence assessments suggest Tehran possesses approximately 450 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, a level that could potentially be upgraded to weapons-grade material in a relatively short period.

Earlier reports indicated that the United States and Israel had been considering targeted operations to secure or neutralise such nuclear material should Iran’s defences weaken further during the conflict.

A Turning Point in the Conflict?

The debate surrounding Kharg Island highlights the complex strategic choices facing Washington. Targeting the island could significantly weaken Iran’s economic capacity to sustain the war. However, it also carries the risk of escalating tensions across the Gulf and destabilising global energy markets.

Once viewed primarily as a strategic pressure point, Kharg Island now appears to have become an active battlefield. As the conflict deepens, analysts suggest the fate of this small but critical island could play a decisive role in shaping the next phase of the war.
