Maharashtra: A youth has been arrested in the Mumbra area of Thane district, Maharashtra, for allegedly spreading false information about a lockdown on social media, police said.
The accused had circulated a video claiming that a strict lockdown would be imposed from midnight. Presented in a manner suggesting access to credible information, the video was widely shared without verification, quickly going viral and triggering panic and confusion among residents in Mumbra and nearby areas.
As concerns over a possible lockdown spread, many locals were left anxious, reflecting the lingering sensitivity around such restrictions.
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, Mumbra police launched an immediate investigation. Using technical surveillance methods, they were able to identify and trace the individual responsible for the viral video. He was subsequently taken into custody.
During questioning, the accused failed to provide any valid justification for disseminating the misleading content. Police issued him a stern warning and directed him to apologise publicly. Officials reiterated that spreading false information is a punishable offence and can create unnecessary fear and disruption in society.
Following the incident, police urged the public not to believe or share unverified information circulating on social media. They emphasised the importance of checking the authenticity of any news before forwarding it and warned that strict action would be taken against those found spreading rumours.
Officials also noted that with the increasing use of digital platforms, instances of misinformation being shared without due diligence are on the rise. Such actions, they cautioned, have consequences not only for individuals but for society at large.
