Pakistan Offers to Host Peace Talks on West Asia Conflict

Shehbaz Sharif has expressed Pakistan’s willingness to host peace talks aimed at de-escalating the ongoing conflict in West Asia, signalling Islamabad’s intent to play a proactive diplomatic role in the region.

In a statement posted on social media, Sharif said Pakistan “welcomes and fully supports ongoing efforts to pursue dialogue to end the war in the Middle East, in the interest of peace and stability in the region and beyond.” He added that, subject to the concurrence of the United States and Iran, Pakistan stands ready to facilitate “meaningful and conclusive talks” toward a comprehensive settlement.

The development follows reports that Pakistan could emerge as a potential venue for negotiations after US President Donald Trump announced a five-day delay in planned strikes on Iranian targets, citing “very good and productive conversations” with Tehran. The reports indicate that the diplomatic opening was the result of coordinated efforts involving Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

In parallel diplomatic engagements, Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir held discussions with Trump, followed by a conversation between Sharif and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Reports from international media suggest that senior officials from Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey also engaged with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to exchange messages aimed at identifying a diplomatic off-ramp to the conflict.

However, the White House has downplayed speculation regarding the venue and status of any potential talks. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasised that no meeting should be considered final until officially announced, noting that the United States would not conduct negotiations through the media in a fluid and sensitive diplomatic environment.

Separately, Narendra Modi held a conversation with Trump to discuss the evolving situation in West Asia. In a statement, Modi reiterated India’s support for de-escalation and the early restoration of peace, while underscoring the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, secure and accessible for global stability.

The developments highlight an intensifying diplomatic push involving multiple regional and global stakeholders, even as uncertainty continues to surround the prospects and timing of formal negotiations.
