The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly stepping up efforts to bring actor-turned-politician Vijay’s newly formed party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), into the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as part of its broader strategy ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
According to reports, senior BJP leadership is directly overseeing the negotiations. However, Vijay’s decision is believed to be influenced by the party’s past association with Rajinikanth and his evolving political positioning. The BJP is said to view Vijay’s support as crucial to prevent a split in anti-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) votes in the state.
In a bid to strengthen outreach, the BJP has reportedly engaged Pawan Kalyan as an intermediary. Having transitioned from cinema to politics, Kalyan is seen as a figure who could potentially influence Vijay, particularly among younger voters.
Despite these efforts, Vijay remains cautious. Observers note that the political trajectory of Rajinikanth—who, at one stage, faced criticism from the DMK as being aligned with the BJP—continues to weigh on Vijay’s considerations. There are concerns within his camp that a similar perception could alienate anti-BJP voters and impact his party’s electoral prospects.
Vijay has already positioned TVK as a secular party and publicly ruled out alliances with what he describes as divisive forces. He has also indicated his intention to contest the upcoming Assembly elections independently. While he has identified the BJP as an ideological adversary, he continues to view the DMK as his primary political rival in the state.
Recent remarks by Rajinikanth praising Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin have further fuelled political debate, adding complexity to the evolving dynamics. The interplay between cinema and politics—long a defining feature of Tamil Nadu—appears to be entering a new phase, with fan rivalries increasingly reflecting political alignments.
Vijay has also openly criticised several policies of the central government, reinforcing perceptions that aligning with the NDA could undermine his party’s independent identity. As a result, he is proceeding with caution, aiming to carve out a distinct political space separate from established narratives.
While the BJP is keen to convert Vijay’s significant influence among Tamil Nadu’s youth into electoral gains, the challenges of transitioning cinematic popularity into sustained political success remain evident—lessons underscored by past experiences in the state.
As discussions continue, it remains to be seen whether TVK will maintain its independent course or recalibrate its strategy in response to evolving political pressures.
