Fatality Reported After Strike Near Bushehr Nuclear Plant; Global Concerns Intensify

A person was killed after a projectile struck an area near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant on Saturday, according to Iranian media reports. The incident marks the fourth reported strike in the vicinity of the facility since the onset of the ongoing conflict, raising fresh concerns over the safety of critical nuclear infrastructure.

As per initial reports, a member of the plant’s security personnel lost his life after being hit by fragments from the blast. Authorities confirmed that a structure within the site sustained damage due to shockwaves and debris. However, officials stated that there has been no increase in radiation levels following the incident.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed serious concern over the developments. Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated that nuclear facilities and their surrounding areas must never be targeted under any circumstances.

Grossi cautioned that even auxiliary buildings at such sites may house critical safety systems, making any attack in their vicinity highly dangerous. He called for maximum restraint, warning that continued strikes could heighten the risk of a significant nuclear incident.

Despite multiple incidents reported near sensitive installations, international observers, including the IAEA, have so far confirmed that no radiation leaks have occurred.

Russia Seeks Temporary Ceasefire for Evacuation

In a related development, Russia is expected to request a temporary ceasefire from the United States and Israel to facilitate the safe evacuation of its personnel from the Bushehr facility, according to reports by RIA Novosti.

Alexey Likhachev, chief of Rosatom, stated that Moscow plans to share evacuation routes with both countries and utilise all available diplomatic channels to ensure there is no military activity during the movement.

He added that the “final phase” of evacuation—expected to involve around 200 personnel—is likely to take place next week.

The latest developments have amplified international concern over repeated military activity near nuclear facilities, with experts warning that any escalation in such sensitive zones could trigger far-reaching environmental and humanitarian consequences.
