Gavaskar Calls for Stricter IPL Player Commitments Amid Growing Availability Concerns

MUMBAI — Legendary former captain Sunil Gavaskar has intensified the debate surrounding player availability in the Indian Premier League (IPL), urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to implement more stringent regulations for overseas players who withdraw from the tournament after being secured at auction.

Writing in his latest column for Sportstar, Gavaskar argued that franchises, which invest "truckloads of money" and offer extensive hospitality to players and their families, are entitled to total commitment. He dismissed the common defense that franchises are "informed beforehand" of a player’s absence, questioning the timing and transparency of such disclosures.

"To suggest that the franchise was ‘informed before’ isn’t a great excuse," Gavaskar wrote. "Playing for the country is paramount, but don’t the franchises deserve full commitment? 'Informed before'—but how long before the opening day?"

Challenging the 'Workload' Narrative

Gavaskar also took a pointed swipe at the prevailing concerns regarding workload management, specifically for bowlers. He noted that the physical demands of a T20 match are relatively modest compared to other formats.

"A bowler is expected to bowl just 56 overs across 14 league games over two months," Gavaskar noted. "If they are bowling a similar number of deliveries in practice without issue, what is stopping them from doing so in the game?"

Franchises Left in the Lurch

The timing of these remarks coincides with several high-profile franchises grappling with the absence of marquee overseas talent:

  • Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR): The team remains a bowler short as Cameron Green continues his recovery from injury. Despite Cricket Australia’s prior communication and Green’s presence in the KKR nets, he has yet to be cleared for match play.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH): The franchise’s campaign has been significantly disrupted with captain Pat Cummins ruled out for at least the first half of the season, leaving the team without a clear timeline for his return.

Gavaskar’s commentary suggests a growing sentiment that the BCCI must intervene to protect the commercial and competitive integrity of the league, ensuring that the financial investment made by franchises is met with a reciprocal level of professional accountability from the players.
