A Belfast man accused of assaulting a Ryanair cabin crew member on a Dublin–Amsterdam flight has been further remanded in custody, pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Christopher Tinsley (34), a self-employed painter with an address on Shankill Road, Belfast, is charged with assault causing harm to a male flight attendant during an incident aboard the scheduled 6.25pm Ryanair service on Friday. The flight was aborted moments before take-off at Dublin Airport.
He also faces two additional charges under the Air Navigation and Transport (Amendment) Act, 1998, relating to alleged disruptive onboard behaviour. Prosecutors allege he was intoxicated to such an extent that he posed a potential risk to the safety of himself and others on the aircraft, and that he engaged in threatening, abusive, or insulting conduct.
Flight Disruption and Alleged Assault
The court heard that the incident occurred as the aircraft was on the runway and preparing for departure. Gardaí stated that the disruption forced the pilot to abort take-off and return the aircraft, resulting in a delay of approximately two hours.
The investigating officer, Garda Ahmed Bilal, told the court that the complainant sustained a visible facial injury and provided a formal witness statement. Bail was opposed on the grounds that the accused posed a flight risk and resides outside the jurisdiction.
Bail Conditions and Custody Status
Mr Tinsley was previously granted bail on condition that he provide €500 of a €1,000 bond and an independent surety of €1,000, with half of the surety to be lodged in cash. However, he has not yet met these conditions and remains in custody.
He has also agreed, upon release, to surrender his passport, avoid Dublin Airport, and sign on weekly at Dundalk Garda Station.
Court Proceedings
At a recent hearing, Judge Áine Clancy noted that gardaí require a further six weeks to obtain directions from the DPP. Defence solicitor Brian Keenan informed the court that his client has not yet taken up bail.
The court directed that the accused receive medical attention while in custody and remanded him in continuing detention with consent to bail. The matter has been adjourned to April 15.
The case remains under investigation, and no plea has yet been entered.
