Mumbai: A personal account shared by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde at a religious event has triggered a political controversy in Maharashtra, after her remarks on recovering from a chronic illness were described as a “miracle,” drawing sharp reactions from opposition leaders.
Speaking at the ‘Bhagwan Mahavir Janma Kalyanak Mahotsav’ in Borivli on Tuesday evening, Tawde said she had suffered from a persistent throat ailment for nearly two years, which had not responded to medical treatment. She attributed her recovery to the blessings of Jain monk Rashtrasant Param Gurudev Shri Namramuni Maharaj.
“He prayed for me, and I am truly amazed that with his ashirwad, I am able to speak like this before all of you,” she said, describing her recovery as a “big miracle.”
MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha, who was present at the event, further suggested that Tawde’s political journey from corporator to mayor was also influenced by the blessings of the spiritual leader and support from senior political figures.
According to reports, the mayor’s comments were made in the context of expressing personal faith during a religious gathering attended by several public representatives.
Political Controversy Erupts
The remarks, however, sparked a political storm amid the backdrop of the ongoing controversy involving self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, who has been accused of exploiting individuals under the guise of performing miracles and tantric practices. The charged atmosphere surrounding the term “miracle” in Maharashtra politics added further sensitivity to the issue.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut responded sharply, making indirect references that were interpreted as linking Tawde’s remarks to the broader controversy. His comments intensified the political debate and drew strong reactions from the ruling party.
Mayor’s Response
Responding to the backlash, Mayor Tawde clarified that her statement had been misrepresented and taken out of context. She strongly rejected allegations of promoting superstition, stating that her remarks were an expression of personal faith.
“It is filthy and disgusting. Who are you associating with whom?” she said, criticising the portrayal of her comments in the media.
Distinguishing between faith and superstition, she added, “I merely expressed my faith — I did not promote superstition.”
Tawde also targeted political opponents, stating that certain leaders were making remarks for “petty political gains” while questioning their own standards of conduct.
She further expressed concern over online trolling and media coverage, asking whether critics had “basic respect for women in their families,” in a pointed rebuttal to those attacking her.
Opposition Reaction
Former Mumbai Mayor and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar also criticised Tawde’s remarks, linking the issue to the broader controversy involving Ashok Kharat, further deepening the political divide.
