Narendra Modi to Chair Key CCS Meeting on West Asia Crisis and Economic Impact

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair an extended meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) at 7 pm on Wednesday to review the evolving situation in West Asia and assess its potential implications for India’s energy security, supply chains, and overall macroeconomic stability.

The meeting follows a recent CCS review held on March 22, during which the government conducted a comprehensive assessment of the availability of essential commodities and identified key sectors likely to be affected by the ongoing conflict. The CCS, India’s highest decision-making body on national security and strategic matters, is headed by the Prime Minister and includes Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, and S. Jaishankar.

Senior ministers handling key economic and infrastructure portfolios are also expected to attend, similar to the March 22 meeting, which included ministers responsible for agriculture, commerce, railways, shipping, petroleum, power, food, and civil aviation.

Earlier Review of Essential Supplies

During the March 22 meeting, the government reviewed the availability of critical supplies, including food, fertilisers, fuel, and electricity, in light of the evolving global situation. The Prime Minister directed a coordinated, whole-of-government approach involving ministers and senior officials to address the impact of the West Asia conflict.

An official statement noted that the ongoing conflict could have significant short-, medium-, and long-term effects on the global economy. Its potential impact on India was assessed, and both immediate and long-term countermeasures were discussed.

The review also focused on ensuring adequate fertiliser availability for the upcoming kharif season and exploring alternative import sources to maintain supply continuity. Coal stocks at power plants and the need for uninterrupted electricity supply were also examined.

In addition, the government evaluated options to diversify import sources for sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals, while also exploring new export markets for Indian goods.

Energy Security and Supply Chain Concerns

The earlier CCS meeting assessed the impact of the conflict across multiple sectors, including agriculture, petroleum, power, trade, MSMEs, shipping, finance, and logistics, with a focus on maintaining stable supply chains and preventing disruptions.

Emphasising the evolving nature of the global situation, the Prime Minister called for coordinated efforts to safeguard citizens from its effects. He also directed authorities to work closely with state governments to prevent hoarding and black marketing of essential commodities.

Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan presented a detailed overview of the global situation along with mitigation measures planned by various ministries.

Prime Minister Highlights Global Energy Challenges

On March 31, Prime Minister Modi stated that despite global challenges related to fuel and energy supplies arising from the West Asia conflict, India has managed to keep the situation under control through effective foreign policy and coordinated domestic efforts.

He noted that the crisis has led to increased pressure on global supplies of diesel, petrol, and gas, but India has successfully contained its impact.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi warned of a potential “financial earthquake,” citing concerns over rising fuel prices and inflation linked to the ongoing crisis.

Escalation in West Asia

The conflict escalated following a February 28 strike on Iranian territory by the United States and Israel, which triggered retaliatory action from Tehran. The situation has affected global energy markets, particularly due to disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil supplies.

Since the onset of the crisis, the Prime Minister has held discussions with several global leaders to monitor developments and mitigate potential economic impacts on India.
