CHENNAI — Union Home Minister Amit Shah spearheaded a high-decibel campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, leading a major roadshow in Mylapore and delivering a stinging critique of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
With the state set to vote in a single phase on April 23, the Home Minister positioned the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as the primary challenger to the established political order in South India.
Mylapore Roadshow and Strategic Outreach
In Mylapore, Shah campaigned alongside BJP candidate Tamilisai Soundararajan, who is contesting the South Chennai seat. The event drew significant crowds, with supporters lining the streets to greet the Home Minister. Following the event, Shah took to social media to highlight the momentum, stating that the constituency had "turned saffron" in a show of strength for the party.
Attack on Nepotism and Corruption
Earlier in the day, while addressing a rally in the Modakurichi constituency for candidate Kirthika Shivkumar, Shah launched a pointed offensive against Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. He characterized the DMK’s leadership as a "dynastic legacy" that prioritizes family interests over public welfare.
"First Karunanidhi, then Stalin, and now his son. This family nepotism will never serve the people of Tamil Nadu," Shah remarked. He further alleged that the DMK administration is mired in corruption, vowing that an NDA victory would usher in a new era of transparent governance.
Focus on Women’s Representation and State Interests
The Home Minister also targeted the Congress-DMK alliance on national and regional issues, specifically regarding the Women's Reservation Bill and the delimitation of parliamentary seats.
Women’s Rights: Shah accused the opposition of historically obstructing the progress of women in Parliament, contrasting this with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to "justice for Tamil Nadu’s women."
Seat Allocation: He further claimed that the alliance had worked against increasing Tamil Nadu’s representation in the legislature, promising that the BJP would ensure the state receives its due share of political influence at the federal level.
Election Countdown
As the campaign enters its final stretch, the BJP is making a concerted effort to expand its footprint in a state traditionally dominated by Dravidian parties.
Polling Date: April 23, 2026
Results Announcement: May 4, 2026
The high-profile visit underscores the BJP’s strategic focus on Tamil Nadu as a crucial frontier in the 2026 electoral landscape.
