Polling for the 2026 Assembly elections concluded at 6 p.m. on Thursday across key constituencies in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, marking a significant phase in one of the country’s largest democratic exercises.
Meanwhile, West Bengal witnessed polling for 152 seats spanning 16 districts during the first phase of its multi-stage election process. A substantial deployment of central armed police forces was undertaken, particularly in sensitive areas, to safeguard against any incidents of violence or voter intimidation. The second phase of polling in the state is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29.
Amid the conclusion of voting, the Election Commission of India issued a fresh set of post-poll guidelines, introducing stricter protocols for the handling and monitoring of surveillance systems following the close of polls.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner, with stringent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
Campaigning in both states had concluded earlier in the week, paving the way for direct electoral contests among major political parties and alliances. The counting of votes will be conducted in accordance with the schedule to be announced by the Election Commission.
