India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday delivered a stern warning to Pakistan, cautioning against inflammatory rhetoric amid rising tensions between the two nations. His remarks came in response to recent statements by Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who had suggested the possibility of targeting Kolkata in the event of a future escalation.
Addressing the issue, Singh underscored the dangers of provocative language, urging restraint. He invoked the historical precedent of Pakistan’s division during the Bangladesh Liberation War, cautioning that past consequences should serve as a reminder against escalating hostilities.
“Pakistan’s Defence Minister should not have made such a provocative statement. Fifty-five years ago, they faced the consequences when the country was divided,” Singh said. He further warned that any hostile intent towards eastern India could have severe repercussions, adding that such actions could lead to unpredictable outcomes for Pakistan.
The remarks follow statements made by Asif over the weekend in Sialkot, where he warned that Pakistan would respond forcefully to any perceived provocation from India. He alleged the possibility of a “false flag operation” by India and claimed that Pakistan would retaliate by striking Kolkata, though he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.
Asif also reiterated that Pakistan’s response to any aggression would be “swift, calibrated, and decisive,” echoing earlier assertions made in reaction to Singh’s previous warning that any “misadventure” by India’s neighbour would invite an “unprecedented and decisive” response.
The exchange highlights the continuing strain in bilateral relations, particularly in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, which triggered a brief but intense four-day military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The latest rhetoric underscores the fragile nature of regional stability, with both sides issuing strong warnings while the international community continues to call for restraint and de-escalation.
