Congress Plays a Waiting Game as Bhagwant Mann Government Faces Uncertainty in Punjab

The Indian National Congress appears to be adopting a cautious and calculated approach toward the stability of the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Despite political rivalry, the Congress is not keen on seeing the Mann administration collapse in the current scenario.

This seemingly counterintuitive stance follows recent political developments triggered by Raghav Chadha and the reported exit of several AAP MPs. Congress leaders assess that a sudden fall of the Mann government could enable AAP to regroup, rebuild its narrative, and potentially garner public sympathy—particularly in Punjab, where political loyalty (“wafaadari”) is often highly valued by voters.

According to sources, nearly 50 AAP MLAs are believed to be in contact with the Bharatiya Janata Party, raising the possibility of defections in the coming weeks. Such a shift could alter the political landscape significantly, potentially paving the way for a new power arrangement. One possible outcome being discussed is a revival of an alliance involving the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP—an equation that the Congress views as politically disadvantageous.

Adding to Congress’s concerns is the internal vulnerability within its own ranks. The party, still recovering from a decisive electoral defeat in Punjab, continues to grapple with factionalism and leadership challenges. There is also apprehension that some Congress MLAs could be susceptible to political realignment.

The Shiromani Akali Dal was among the first to publicly suggest the possibility of the AAP government’s fall, although it has not formally indicated any renewed alliance with the BJP. Meanwhile, the BJP continues to view Punjab as a strategic priority, similar to its long-term efforts in states like West Bengal. However, the party faces a structural challenge in the absence of a strong Sikh leadership base, which remains critical for political consolidation in the state.

The BJP is also mindful of its past alliance dynamics with the Akali Dal, where shifting power equations created friction. As such, the party is believed to be exploring the possibility of cultivating its own Sikh leadership, while keeping alliance options open.

In this fluid political environment, a potential split within AAP—possibly even involving key leadership realignments—could present an opportunity for the BJP. However, such a development would simultaneously pose a significant strategic risk for the Congress, a scenario reportedly deliberated during a recent internal review meeting following the defection of multiple AAP MPs.

Overall, Punjab’s political landscape remains in a state of flux, with all major parties recalibrating their strategies amid evolving alliances and internal uncertainties.
