Convicted Murderer Brian Kearney’s Supervised Release Aborted After Media Presence Noted

DUBLIN — A sanctioned temporary release for convicted "wife-killer" Brian Kearney was abruptly terminated on Sunday morning after prison authorities spotted a press photographer at the designated meeting location.

Kearney, 67, was being escorted by prison officers from Wheatfield Prison to a "neutral" venue in a West Dublin village. The visit, granted on compassionate grounds, was intended to facilitate a session at a counseling and family reunification service. However, as the vehicle arrived, officials observed the presence of a photographer. Kearney, flanked by three officers, was immediately ushered back into the car and returned to the prison facility.

Parole Ambitions and Family Outrage

The aborted visit was part of a broader assessment as Kearney enters his fifth attempt to secure parole. Now 18 years into a life sentence, Kearney had hoped the session would bolster his upcoming meeting with the Parole Board.

The victim’s family, however, remains steadfastly opposed to any form of leniency. Brighid McLaughlin, sister of the late Siobhan McLaughlin, expressed the family’s distress over the lack of consultation regarding Kearney’s movements.

"We received a cold email informing us of his compassionate leave with no further explanation. It has sent shockwaves through the family. We are now left worried that we could encounter him in public without warning."

Deirdre McLaughlin, Siobhan’s mother, also voiced her profound fear and intent to testify before the Parole Board next month, stating she remains "terrified" of the prospect of his release.

Background of the Case

The murder of Siobhan McLaughlin in 2006 remains one of Ireland's most notorious domestic homicides.

  • The Crime: Kearney strangled his wife with a vacuum cleaner cord at their home in Goatstown while their three-year-old son slept in the adjacent room.

  • The Cover-up: He attempted to stage the scene as a suicide by using the cord as a ligature over an en-suite door.

  • The Motive: Prosecutors argued that Kearney murdered Siobhan because she intended to leave him—a move that would have caused him significant financial strain.

Current Status

While the Irish Prison Service does not comment on individual prisoner movements, sources indicate that Kearney is "enraged" by the disruption of his visit. Despite his reportedly failing health and routine hospital visits, the Parole Board must now weigh his compassionate needs against the grave nature of his crime and the ongoing safety concerns expressed by the McLaughlin family.
