Dublin Man Held with €117,000 in Suspected Crime Proceeds, Court Told

A Dublin man accused of transporting suspected proceeds of crime totalling over €117,000 was found to have ledgers documenting cash movements amounting to €5 million concealed within a hidden compartment in his vehicle, a court has heard.

Alan Smith (45), a labourer from Ballintree Villas, Tyrrellstown, Dublin 15, was arrested following an operation by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau. He was stopped at Newtown Park in Blackrock, County Dublin, on April 23, 2026.

Smith is charged with possession of €117,100, alleged to be the proceeds of criminal conduct. He appeared before Judge Michele Finan at Dublin District Court, where he was remanded in custody after opting to defer a bail application.

Surveillance and Arrest

The court heard that the case arises from an ongoing investigation into a transnational organised crime group. Detective Garda Mark Donovan testified that the accused had been under surveillance and was observed briefly interacting with an unidentified individual in Monkstown, County Dublin. During the encounter, a bag was allegedly passed through the driver’s window of Smith’s vehicle.

Smith, who has not yet entered a plea, made no reply when formally charged, the court was told.

Hidden Compartment Discovery

Following his arrest, the vehicle—a Ford Mondeo—was searched at Dundrum Garda Station. Officers discovered a significant sum of cash concealed within a “deep concealment” compartment located in the rear seat of the car.

The court heard that the compartment had been modified with an aftermarket mechanism, operated via a button concealed within the cigarette lighter.

In addition to the seized cash, gardaí recovered ledgers and documents indicating substantial financial activity dating back to 2021. These records, including what was described as a “tick list,” allegedly detailed the movement of up to €5 million in cash.

Investigation and Bail Concerns

Investigators also seized the accused’s mobile phone; however, it is reportedly encrypted and remains inaccessible.

Detective Garda Donovan expressed concerns that Smith may pose a flight risk, citing alleged links to an organised crime network with the capacity to facilitate evasion of justice.

The court was told that Smith, a married father of three who is currently unemployed, has resided at the same address for several decades. During questioning, he is understood to have indicated that he had been acting under threat.

Defence counsel Kevin McCrave raised this point during proceedings.

Case to Continue

The matter has been adjourned for a bail ruling scheduled for Wednesday. A decision on the granting of legal aid has also been deferred, pending submission of a statement outlining the accused’s financial means.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities continue to examine the alleged links to organised criminal activity.
