A controversy has erupted at University of Delhi after Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president Aryan Maan and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly forced their way into Gargi College, a women’s institution, during ongoing student election activity.
The incident has triggered sharp political reactions, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticising the move and raising concerns over student safety and campus autonomy.
Entry Denied, Situation Escalates
According to reports, Aryan Maan and ABVP members arrived at the college campus on Friday, reportedly in connection with student council elections. However, they were denied entry in accordance with institutional rules that restrict male access to the premises except under specific, verified circumstances.
Despite the restriction, Maan and others allegedly entered the campus forcibly, claiming they were responding to concerns raised by a contesting candidate regarding the fairness of the electoral process.
Students present on campus described the entry as intimidating, citing aggressive verbal exchanges and body language. Gargi College, notably, operates largely outside the direct framework of DUSU politics and does not host active student political organisations.
Police Intervention and Restoration of Order
Police personnel stationed at the campus intervened promptly, escorting Maan and the accompanying group out of the premises and ensuring that order was maintained.
Authorities confirmed that no untoward incidents were reported during the episode and that the election process concluded peacefully. Officials also noted that no formal complaint has been filed by any individual or group in connection with the incident.
During the episode, several students reportedly raised slogans against the ABVP, reflecting heightened tensions on campus.
ABVP’s Version of Events
Responding to the controversy, ABVP Delhi state secretary Sarthak Sharma stated that the situation escalated following a protest.
He claimed that a contesting student—described as unaffiliated with major student groups—had approached the DUSU president alleging discrimination due to her apolitical stance. According to Sharma, ABVP members had initially staged a sit-in protest, which intensified after a non-teaching staff member allegedly verbally confronted them, leading to the forced entry.
AAP Raises Safety Concerns
The incident has drawn strong criticism from the AAP, which shared visuals of the घटना on social media and described it as a serious breach of campus security.
The party questioned whether such actions reflected the “sanskaar” (values) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its student wing, ABVP. It also raised concerns over the safety of students in a women’s college, arguing that such incidents undermine confidence in institutional safeguards.
AAP further pointed to the contrast between public messaging on women’s safety and the events at the campus, stating that the episode “raises serious questions” about the security environment for female students.
Outlook
The incident has reignited debate over the role of student political organisations, campus autonomy, and safety protocols in educational institutions. While authorities maintain that the situation was swiftly contained, the political fallout is likely to keep the issue in focus in the coming days.
