IAF Aircraft Incident Disrupts Operations at Pune International Airport

An incident involving an aircraft of the Indian Air Force late on Thursday night temporarily rendered the runway at Pune International Airport inoperative, leading to the diversion of several incoming flights.

According to sources, the aircraft involved was a Sukhoi Su-30MKI. In a statement posted on X at approximately 11:41 p.m., the Air Force’s Media Coordination Centre confirmed that the runway had been closed following the incident. It added that all aircrew members were safe and that no damage had been reported to civil infrastructure.

“The runway is temporarily unavailable due to an incident involving an IAF aircraft. The aircrew are safe, and there is no damage to civil property. Efforts are underway to restore operations at the earliest,” the statement said.

Runway Restoration and Resumption of Operations
Officials later confirmed that restoration work had been completed and that the runway would reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, allowing normal flight operations to resume.

Flight Diversions Across Multiple Cities
Flight tracking data indicated that at least eight inbound flights were diverted to other airports, including Surat International Airport, Manohar International Airport, Navi Mumbai International Airport, Chennai International Airport, and Coimbatore International Airport. Passengers experienced delays and rerouting as authorities worked to restore normal operations.

Second Incident This Year
This marks the second reported incident this year involving a Su-30MKI aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force. On March 5, a similar aircraft crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, resulting in the deaths of both pilots.
